Project Overview

The Huntington Middle School Modernization delivered a comprehensive $30 million renovation and expansion of the 70-year-old educational facility, transforming the existing infrastructure while adding new programmatic spaces. The project included modernization of the main building totaling 78,519 square feet on approximately 6.5 acres, with an additional 6,000 square foot expansion to the north housing a new auxiliary gymnasium and main building entry. Construction began in August 2021 with substantial completion achieved by October 2022, allowing students to return to the modernized facility on October 11, 2022.

Project Scope

The modernization included replacement of all major MEP (mechanical/HVAC, electric, plumbing) systems, office relocation and new school entry, a second gymnasium, significant cosmetic updates, and track replacement with football field irrigation and renewal. Classrooms received new lighting, windows, flooring, and electrical outlets, with electronic overhead projectors installed as teaching tools. The library features a higher ceiling with floor-to-ceiling windows for natural light, while the cafeteria was upgraded with new kitchen equipment. New security vestibules with electronic controls ensure all school doors remain locked during the day. The project maintained the school’s operational capacity for approximately 550 students and 50 staff members.

Key Features

Due to the scope of construction, students were temporarily relocated to Catlin Elementary School for the entire 2021-22 school year to ensure optimal learning conditions and construction safety. The project followed the Washington State Sustainable Schools Protocol for energy conservation and environmentally friendly construction. The music room was refurbished with a higher ceiling and acoustic diffusers, while the existing gymnasium received new flooring to replace surfaces that had yellowed over time. The modernization preserved the historic character of the 1952-built facility while bringing all systems and spaces up to contemporary educational standards.
